6th February 2008

I've decided I really want to enter the VSCC Pomeroy Trophy race at Silverstone on the 23rd February but to do so my car needs to be road legal (which mine isn't); maybe it's a bit hair-brained (and short noticed) but on looking into it there isn't a great deal I would need to do to get the Firenza MOT'd and it won't make a difference to the car race-wise.

Basically all it would entail is a working horn, two wipers (as I have two spindels I must have two blades), number plates (still got the old ones and the holes are still there), indicators (which I did have but had to use the switch and wire for a fan to clear the misting I'd encountered when racing) and then the last thing was some form of washer system - which literally can be anything that propels water onto the windscreen.

I didn't think the above was too much to do and I checked with my friendly MOT man (he even said he'd just done an MOT on a VW Camper van and the washer system was a Fairly Liquid bottle tied to the dasboard with a pipe going through the side window, attached to the windscreen with a cable tie and was operated by hand power!!), so all systems go.

Mike Hutchinson popped round to collect a couple of bits that he bought from me on ebay and other than admiring his beautiful Vauxhall Viva GT we discussed my current project and he said he had some spare wipers and washer bottles he'd drop off in the next few days, excellent.

Well it almost came off; I managed to get the indicators done, attached the horn (but not the button or wired in), could only find one wiper blade that fitted, screwed on the number plates and failed miserably with the washer system.  Oh well, there's always next year.

In the meantime I'll try and get some finance together for the start of the racing season and see what happens.

2nd April 2008

I've decided to revert back to silver Avon Safety wheels, rather than the black middle and silver rimmed I have now.  Car Medic are going to do them and I look forward to the results.

Wheels completed and collected and they look brilliant, definitely worth it and I'd recommend Car Medic to anyone.

22nd April 2008

I did manage to get quite a bit done with some help from Denis.  We made an aluminium bracket for the horn button and managed to wire in, earth and try the horn (I can still hear the ringing in my ears!!), charged the battery, attached the washer motor, fit two new wiper blades (splashing out I suppose?!) and I even gave the old brid a wash, ooh err misses.

Whilst doing the above I realised that the interior has changed a bit since I last took some shots (more switches basically) and that I haven't included any good engine bay shots, so please find three below.

18th May 2008 - Finished!!

Finally, the longest anything has taken for me to do.  Everything is now done for the MOT, the last job yesterday - The washing system.  Got some jets, tubing and t-piece from Halfords, all fitted really well and the motor works brilliantly.

I found a two-way swith which works and managed to find a nice position to mount it the right of the steering wheel.  The hardest bit was finding a water bottle but luckily and empy plastic lidded peanut jar was the perfect size and Denis made a tray for it which we rivetted to the front nearside bulkhead, not pretty but effective.

All I need to do know is put the wheels back on and book the MOT, brilliant, oh, and I've made up loads of lables for all the switches but couldn't get them to stick very well yesterday but will sort them out in the next few days and they're not desperately needed.
